Tommy, that's looking awesome! Can't wait to see it finished. I think more textural variation in the BG would add a lot.

Also, I have an update from me:

And the link to my WIP album for the first post: http://s1110.photobucket.com/albums/...hadytradesman/

Superb progress, Tommy! Lovin' it

Also, great job with the effigy, Shady!

Also also, moar progress from me. Drew some haze (hope it's visible) and some kinda flash in the middle. CC on the flash, please, I dunno what I should do with it.

It keeps looking like chalk... It's much smoother in reality, maybe Photobucket's resize function messes it up. Gotta try resizing in GIMP. My flash messed up the moon.

/E: I thought I'd add pumpkins in the bottom right around the ritualist to balance the setting a little more. Now the emphasis is very strongly on the spirit and the flash. It'd look a bit like as if the meeting took place on a pumpkin field

@ Charlie: I don't have Tommy's eye, but I think it looks great and creepy (creepy since I now know that scene in the movie O_O). I guess I can see what Tommy's saying about the lighting and shadowing, but I just figured the light source was about a foot or 2 in front of the girls to make the shadowing like that and you can see the light reflections on the wall about at that point. Depending on how far we assume the dresses come out, then that could account for the lighting of the feet, although maybe the lighting would extend up a bit more?? I'm sooo not an expert on lightning… Thumbs up by the way for adding the cabinet on the side :P

@Tommy: Looks great! Can't wait to see the final version of the King, considering how amazing the pumpkins and guards look!

@shady tradesman: awesome Sorry if you already mentioned this, but are you going to be filling in the whole body with the hay in the background? I think you mentioned lichen in the chest area, but I couldn't remember if you said you'd be filling it up with hay, too (omg, that would be such a pain to do). Are those bits of paper on the ground from when you removed it?

@Oh frustration: There's nothing wrong with chalk. I actually think chalk drawings look very beautiful, so I wouldn't take that as a criticism or something that needs to be fixed Your pic is very beautiful!
I don't know what you mean by "CC on the flash," so I'm going to guess you want some kind of comment on it? I like the outer part of it, but the center is kinda off for me. I would imagine the ritualist and spirit about to hold hands so the spark appears BETWEEN the two palms. From the drawing, it looks like the flash is appearing at the OUTSIDE of the ritualist's hand so the spark isn't really coming from the two palms meeting. You could argue it's because the flash is SO bright that it covers both hands, but then I'd expect some kind of effect of the flash coming towards the viewer to represent that. Of course, you may just not have finished drawing the rest of her hand, which in that case, ignore that comment :P
I'm also kinda iffy on adding pumpkins, because what you have right now is so lovely. On the plus side, the orange and green from the pumpkins wouldn't clash with the colors you have chosen now

on a different note ive been kind of busy/a little lazy this week so i don't have a whole lot of progress since my last update. I've got three pumpkins left to shade (of my 10) so I dont think i'll have problems reaching my deadline. Ive got a few hours free tonight to work on it so we'll see where that gets me.

i dont know if i can stress it enough but I really appreciate criticisms and feedback on how I can improve my art because I want it to turn out as best I can

urgggg i saved my file at different times :/

deviantArt link

So I changed the background from that brown to a black. I dont like it flat black. Some sort of variant ideas?

There are also some orange lines you can see in the black. Those have been cleaned already, i thought when i saved the picture it was after I fixed the pic up a bit but apparently i was mistaken.

once I finish up my pumpkins, I'm going to go in an touch up mad king thorn. my do to list is
a) The glow in the mouth. For somereason theres like, a permanent design in the mouth I can't eliminate or paint over, and I can't find the layer it's on... i may have to search harder. It's also not very well filled, so i need to touch it up.
b)Neckstuff. You can barely see the neck but the fang-things just need to be detailed and whatnot.
c)Collar. It looks decent now, but it deffinatly has potential to be better.

Any suggests/ideas how I should tackle this just let me know. Also, feel free to critique anything from previous updates. The more the merrier (is that how you spell it?)

hmmm…. since we were talking about light sources with charlie's, i guess the same thing can be asked of your pic. Where's the light source? If it's from the face alone, then your green leaf part on king's head should be lit as such. There shouldn't be any light on the base of the stem, but only on the very *tips* of those front 2-4 leaves. The pumpkins in the back, probably wouldn't be lit at all (including the ground), but it looks like there's some lighting on the pumpkin directly behind King. It's kinda a shame, because you put in work on the back pumpkins but we can barely see it, because they're almost completely blacked out

Also, all this time, I thought those fangs thing were the tips of his fingers as he's waiting to get out (like swimming in a pool and holding the edge with your fingers)

The front pumpkins' coloring is so spot on that is seems such a shame that you can't show off the colorings on your others because you don't have another source of light What if you can pretend it's a full moon and there's some moon lighting to brighten the background a bit so we can see your other pumpkins (and maybe some grass for some green)? I'm not sure how much that would affect your current finished pumpkins though . I hope that's somewhat helpful (I still like your pic, but I'm just pointing those stuff out since you mentioned it in yours ).

Argh, in a bit of a funk. The cape is giving me problems and I am still avoiding getting the boots done. Since I don't have any more black cheesecloth I have reversed the cape so the nice ratty looking part is on the inside, so it can be seen from the front view. That means no back shots of MKT. I am irritated at having to cut corners like this but at least it should look good in the pictures. Starching the fabric was not making it stiff enough for the collar so I tried out clear acrylic spray which worked better but OMG the fumes even 12 hours later! I am sewing in ghetto boning (black bias tape and wire coat hangers) and am likely going to have to attach it to the head to get the collar to stand right. At least I have some scraps of cheesecloth to make it a bit prettier around there and THAT stiffens well with the starch. I need to get this done in the next two days so I can take pictures on Sunday.

At least the leaves started changing colors and falling off the trees this week. Doesn't look as green as last years pictures, but its a little better.

My problem with chalk is that the colours do not look like chalk in reality, so I need to find better settings for the camera, when I take a photo of it. Maybe a longer objective and longer shutter time will do the trick, now I took the photo from very close, with a big flash device...

And the pumpkins, I added them yesterday and I think they give a nice balance to the setting. Today I'll add a bit of background and draw the rit's hand a bit further so it looks more realistic. Thanks for the nice comment!

Hmm. . . If I were going to shoot a piece of artwork, I'd get a tripod (or a stack of books), use sunlight as my light source (any time except sunset, sunrise, or noon would be good, I think), stop down the aperture (higher F-numbers), lower the ISO all the way, set the timer for about 2 seconds, and use the shutter speed to adjust exposure.

Also, keep your focal length at at least 35mm. 60mm would be ideal, I think. :3

Here's another update from me:

First, thank you for the advice ^^
Right now, the current light is solely from MKT. When it's finished, the light will sort of curve around the pumpkins in a shape that sort of looks like grin. You can see it on the bottom already (that statements really just to help visualize where i'm headed :P). I see what you mean about the stem. I guess at the time i was visualizing it as if the stem was at the edge of the face... but it's not. Something ill work on in my next update.

I was thinking of making behind MKT totally black (the background will probably be darker), but I thought that some (some being not a lot, just barely visible) light would reflect off the pumpkins infront of MKT. Sort of like how sunlight reflects off the moon to earth at night. It's by no means as bright as directly from the sun, but it's still a little bit visible. The work I have on the back pumpkins is really just black indent lines + black + gradiaded edges, so its not really a big 'loss'. If the sun>moon>earth explaination doesnt sound like it would fit here, let me know. I might be missing a key concept that proves it cant work xD

The fang thing might need a strap over it to make it look more like the ones he actually wears. I don't know if I should leave it in or take it out due to clutter though..

The two pumpkins I haven't finished are going to be shaded/highlighted very similarly to how the bottom right two are. So there will still be more too look at than just those two I could try the moon idea but I think it would look less ominous/contrasting. I like the grass idea... I'll have to play around with different brushs and opacities. I was originally thinking like some other, much more dull pumpkins underneath but they would end up the same shade as the ones I already have... which doesn't work. Grass is a good solution to try.

thanks again for the help, i really appreciate your time ^^
